1 Making Inferences 1

2 When you Infer... Take what you know and make an educated guess.
Draw personal meaning from text (words) or pictures. You use clues to come to your own conclusion. 2

3 How Do Good Readers Make Inferences?
They use: Word/text clues Picture clues Define unknown words Look for emotion (feelings) Use what they already know Look for explanations for events ASK themselves questions! 3

4 Authors vs. Readers Authors Imply, Readers Infer.
Authors make implications that readers have to infer. What do I mean by these statements? Good Readers are Detectives who are always looking out for clues to help them better understand stories and pictures. 4

5 Ways to Respond When Asked to Infer:
The text (or picture) says (or shows), “ ____________,” so I can infer _______________. I know ___________ because ___________. I can infer __________ because ___________.

6 Make an Inference! What does this image tell me? 6

7 Make an Inference 7

8 Remember- ask yourself:
What do I already know that can help me make an inference? Can I use words, graphs, or picture clues to help make a guess about what it means? 8

9 Make an Inference Can he draw More than tigers?
Look up words You don’t know! 9

10 Try Again! 10

11 Make Another Inference
Miss White has recess duty. Jacob finds a frog, picks it up, and runs over to show it to Miss White. Miss White screams, jumps, and runs as fast as she can into the school. What can you infer from this passage? What are the “clues” in this passage? 11

12 Game Time! Let’s play a game to find out how good we are at making inferences: What Can You Infer? 12

13 Inference Task Cards Answers
I know Katie cleaned up an egg because she got the carton from the fridge while making breakfast. I can infer the scout leader felt stressed and that it was going to rain. I know this because he looked at the sky, and told the troop to move fast! If a storm was coming, he wouldn’t want the troop in the storm.

14 Inference Task Cards Answers
3. The text says there was a large empty poster board which made her cry so I can infer Emily had a project that was due the next day and wasn’t finished. 4. I know Lucy is trying to ice skate because the text says she tried to glide backwards but fell and said ouch. If you’re ice skating and you fall, you would shiver because the ice is cold.
