1 Unit 5 Supervised Agricultural Experience
Learn the rationale for and plan a supervised agricultural experience. Unit text is not visible.

2 Introduction Simulate: to look or act like
Real-world experience: activity in the daily routine of society On-the-job training: experience obtained while working in a job setting Supervised agricultural experience (SAE)

3 Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE)
All supervised agricultural experiences: learned outside of the regularly scheduled classroom or laboratory Supervised Looked after and directed Agriscience Business, employment, or trade in agriculture, agribusiness, or renewable natural resources AU: Shouldn’t “Agriscience” be “Agricultural” to go with the phrase Supervised Agricultural experience? If changed, the text for that bullet might also need to change a bit to accommodate the different word. I moved text down a bit.

4 Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) (cont’d.)
Anything and everything observed, done, or lived through SAE categories include: Placement, Research, Entrepreneurship, Experimentation, and Exploratory I deleted the word “Program.”

5 Purpose of SAEs Provide opportunities to creatively explore agriscience careers Provide educational and practical experiences in a specialized area of agriscience Provide opportunities to become established in an agriscience occupation

6 Purpose of SAEs (cont’d.)
Provide opportunities for earning while learning Create opportunities for earning after graduation Develop interests in additional areas of agriscience Develop valuable work skills

7 Purpose of SAEs (cont’d.)
Encourage individualized instruction Ensure recognition for individual achievement Become established in an agriscience business Obtain experience as an entrepreneur

8 Agri-Profile Career area: supervised agricultural experience
Three important elements Experience: hands-on or real-life activities in the workplace Agricultural: setting and skills in an area of plant or animal sciences and related natural resources or management Supervised: teacher, parents, and/or employer help direct the experience In 1. changed workplace to one word. Changed list so numbers have periods, not parentheses. AU: Do you want to change the order of the numbered list and transpose 3 and 1 so the words match the phrase?

9 Agri-Profile (cont’d.)
Career area: supervised agricultural experience Obtaining a position: assistance through school programs; self-initiative Participants: gain an edge in the job market

10 SAE and the Total Agriscience Program

11 SAE and the Total Agriscience Program (cont’d.)
SAE and classroom instruction SAE and the FFA FFA and classroom instruction Proficiency awards: refer to FFA Student Handbook American Star Awards Program American Star in Agriscience, American Star in Agribusiness, American Star in Agricultural Placement, and American Star Farmer awards I moved the text down a bit.

12 Types of SAEs Project Enterprise Exploratory
Series of activities related to a single objective or enterprise Enterprise Refers to a business that raises animals or plants Exploratory Agriscience literacy Career exploration

13 Types of SAEs (cont’d.) Research/experimentation and analysis
Agriscience research project: scientific method applied Ownership/entrepreneurship Production enterprise: produces raw materials, e.g., crops or livestock Placement SAE Agriscience internship Improvement activities

14 Science Connection Agriscience research project: agriscience student in Meridian, Idaho Motivated by a newspaper article: polluted waters of the Snake River Researched contamination of surface water in the delivery and drainage canals of a large irrigation project Data indicated pollution was not runoff water from irrigated fields

15 Agriscience Skills Plan and Profile
Agriscience skills profile: record and competence measure of a student’s skills Provides record of employment skills Documents ability to perform skills

16 Agriscience Skills Plan and Profile (cont’d.)
Most useful and interesting skills Gained through supervised agriculture experience Skills list helps develop the agriscience skills plan and profile I moved the text down a bit. I deleted “programs” from the first dash/bullet text

17 Exploring Opportunities for the SAEs
Personal interest Important factor in SAE success Student Interest Survey or Inventory helps assess interest I moved the text down a bit.

18 Exploring Opportunities for the SAEs (cont’d.)
Resources inventory List of assets and help sources for SAE activities Relies on home, farm, work setting, and community information Includes scale drawing: property where living or working I moved the text down a bit.

19 Selecting and Implementing Your SAE
Overall approach Conference with teacher Record tentative SAE plans Securing a job Brief resumé I rebroke the title and put “Your” on the second line. I deleted the P in SAEP in the BL. I moved the text down a bit.

20 Hot Topics in Agriscience
SAE—inside the dairy business Dairy Heifer Replacement Project: goal of enhancing life skills of youth participants Participant: purchases heifer calf from a program-approved seller Over several months: participant cares for the animal (feed, vaccinations, etc.) Detailed records maintained In some cases: bred and presented for show and sale Deleted “its” preceding youth

21 Selecting and Implementing Your SAE (cont’d.)
Refining the plan Develop accurate estimates: anticipated expenses and income Prepare an Experience Inventory: update frequently Finalize the plans for placement: Placement Agreement document Track the project progress: Improvement Project Plan and Summary Record acquired skills: Agriscience Skills Plan and Record I moved the text down a bit.

22 Science Connection Tracking the disappearing gene
USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS) Thomas E. Devine, plant geneticist of the USDA-ARS plant molecular biology laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland High school research opportunities: genes responsible for disease resistance and nitrogen fixation in soybeans Other USDA-ARS labs and research assistance opportunities available
