6 Educational Overview Goals
Master basic single-injection and continuous peripheral nerve block techniques Gain experience managing continuous perineural infusions for inpatients and outpatients, as well adjunct analgesic medications Learn to apply regional anesthesia techniques in a variety of surgical settings including trauma, elective outpatient and more invasive orthopedics, vascular surgery, abdominal and pelvic procedures, head and neck surgery, and plastic/reconstructive surgery

7 Educational Overview Clinical Experience
Preoperatively: evaluate patients for regional anesthesia techniques and communicate with surgical team to finalize appropriate management Perform regional anesthesia procedures Postoperatively: evaluate patients, adjust local anesthetic infusions to optimize pain control while minimizing side effects 1 day/week: fellows are in the OR either supervising residents/CRNAs or providing direct patient care as staff anesthesiologists Optional compensated OR or OB call Other clinical time is spent either directly administering or teaching residents how to perform regional blocks

8 Educational Overview Each fellow will spend approximately 10 months managing the regional service at Hillcrest, Thornton /Sulpizio Medical Center. The patient population consists of Orthopedic, Oncologic, Plastic, Cardiovascular, Thoracic, General Surgical, and Gynecologic Patients. Optional one month elective can be done in the field of pediatrics or chronic pain or by completing original research. Individualized elective may also be developed by the fellow with approval by the Fellowship Director. Fellows are expected to complete an academic project or QI project during their fellowship

9 Research Projects Recently Completed Projects Ongoing Projects
Continuous Popliteal Nerve Blocks: Effect of Perineural Catheter Tip Location Relative to the Sciatic Nerve Bifurcation on Postoperative Analgesia Femoral Versus Adductor Canal Continuous Peripheral Nerve Blocks for Knee Arthroplasty Continuous TAP Blocks: Relative Effects of a Basal Infusion vs. Repeated Bolus Doses Ongoing Projects Effects of Catheter Location on Postoperative Analgesia for Continuous Adductor Canal and Popliteal-Sciatic Nerve Blocks Electrical Stimulation for the Treatment of Pain Following Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) Using the Smartpatch System
