1 Domain Name System Presentation

2 The presentation will be about
The size of the domain system 3 most important components of the system The function of the system Most significant limitation Legislation in the UK

3 What is a Domain Name System?
A Domain Name System is a system that is used to locate internet Domain Names and translate them into Internet Protocol Addresses which makes it easy for a computer to remember the name of a website.

4 The size of the Domain Name System
The Domain Name System does not have a size limit. One server could contain over 20,000,000 names, and the DNS consists of more than just one server and with all the name servers the Domain Name System will still function well which prevents the system from having a limit on the system. There is also no limit to the number of queries that the database can hold, when the resolver has a number of queries for the database, the database can simply handle more than 20,000 queries per second.

5 The 3 most important components
Server Resolver Name Space

6 Server A server is also used to find information in the name space, all it needs is the names and the IP addresses of the servers. The name server answers queries sent by the resolver about the data stored in name space.

7 Resolvers Resolvers are important for a Domain Name system because the resolvers and the servers both use the process “name resolution” to find data stored in the name space. The resolvers use the name resolution for finding such data as certain IP addresses. The resolver is important because without using the name resolution the Domain Name System will not be able to translate the domain names.

8 Name Space The name space is important to the Domain Name System because it is the structure for the Domain Name Systems database. It consists of different nodes, each node has a name and the nodes are presented in three levels, the Root node, Top level nodes, and Second level nodes. This makes it simple for a node’s domain name to identify its location within the name space.

9 How 3 components are related
The purpose of the Domain Name System is to use its components to translate domain names into IP addresses. The name server, resolver, and name space are related to each other in a way where they operate together to complete the operation of the Domain Name System.

10 How the Domain Name System Functions
The function of the Domain Name System is very important because without the Domain Name System servers the internet will not be accessible. The DNS operates in a form of using different components within the system to function. The Domain Name System uses its components to translate a domain name into an IP address which is used to identify other computers on the network. The Domain Name System database has a domain name server that leads the domain names to the IP addresses.

11 Most Significant Limitation
The most significant limitation of the Domain Name System is the attacks that are focused on the Domain Name System. The issue of the attacks is within the Domain Name System itself, its purpose is to turn web addresses into IP addresses. Instead of going on the correct web pages, the web surfers will get redirected by the attacker to malicious websites instead of the website they wanted to view. For example, a user could type in an address for a certain website but instead of being directed to the website the attacker will redirect the user to a different site that could look exactly like the same site the user wants to visit.

12 Legislation in the UK? The UK may have legislation within the UK itself aimed at Domain Name Systems but it could not prevent the systems from operating or affect the operation or the performance. This is because Domain Name Systems are used everywhere in the world and not only in the UK so the operation cannot be affected by any laws in the UK.
