The Domain Name System Student : 617828 Hi this is my presentation about

What is the DNS? the Domain name system converts website names like www.example.com into ip address that look like a set of numbers such as 184.0.19.10. This is so users like us can search for things online that mean something to what we are looking for, such as if you wanted to look up some think about water, you would type in water in the search engine. This is far easier than typing an IP address not only because we wouldn’t remember the code but we wouldn’t know what it meant necessarily

The size of the domain name system The size of the domain name system is huge it contains billions of names as it provides addresses for all websites ever created.

Which 3 components are the most important for DNS operations Name Space This establishes the syntactical rules for creating and structuring DNS names. DNS namespace identifies the structure of domains that link to form a domain name Name Servers This is where the user friendly part comes in, instead of remembering the binary address code of the site your looking for you can simply type in the word that relates to what you want, and it will come up with sites related to it. Resolvers A resolver is a host that is capable of performing a recursive search of the DNS to locate records that answers a query. This is done by querying name servers, including root servers. The resolver can be said to be a DNS server that looks up DNS records for a client machine.

the function of the Domain Name System The function of the DNS system is to make it easier for users to find things on the internet, all the websites are actually named in binary and we wouldn't know what to type in, so the DNS names the binary sites with words we can understand, this means we can type in water for example and all sites related will come up, or we can simply type in a name of a site we know about for example www.water.com. This would be very difficult if the site ww.water.com was written in binary as we wouldn't know how to search for it.

Is the Domain Name System affected by any legislation The Domain Name System is affected by some legislation in the Uk, but not always directly, there are some domain extensions which are reserved such as.museum and.gov, this means know one else can use them apart from whomever is authorized. It is also possible to protect domain names, sometimes cases are brought to court, for example when wwf the wrestling programme was contested for the name by the animal protection group the name of their site had to be changed as they lost the case.

What is the most significant limitation to the continued operation of the Domain Name System The most significant limitation to the operation of the Domain Name system is the amount of names there can be, although there can be a huge amount there could potentially be a shortage at some point, this would have to be addressed by upgrading from IPv4 protocol to IPv6. Without this upgrade, the Internet can only support between 4 and 4.5 billion IP addresses.
