1 Fossil Fuels and their Effects
May 29, 2014

2 FOSSIL FUELS Nonrenewable resources from ancient organism remains
Not easily accessible Large quantities in small areas

3 Three main types (how are they different)
Petroleum (Crude Oil) Liquid mixture Need to drill to access Separated by weight and boiling point into gasoline, jet fuel, Natural gas Gas mixture Less air pollution; very flammable Add odor afterwards for safety reasons Coal (October Sky) Solid Large amounts of air pollution Mine and dig underground for it

4 By-products of burning fossil fuels
Many of the by products have negative effects on the population: Breathing problems, cancer, emphysema, bronchitis Global warming, ozone depletion, ground ozone/particulates Harm ecosystems and impacts plants, animals, and water sources negatively Acid rain

5 Greenhouse Gases They are NECESSARY They are naturally occurring
Without them, the Earth would be TOO COLD to support life

6 Greenhouse Gases Infrared radiation from the sun is trapped by our atmosphere Major greenhouse gases: Carbon dioxide Methane Nitrous oxide Industrial gases: Hydrofluorocarbons Perfluorocarbons Sulfur hexaflouride Water vapor Ozone

7 Carbon Footprint Reflects the amount of CO2 pollution caused by your energy usage Factors that affect your carbon footprint: Where you live Type of building you live in Your home energy use Your transportation The food you eat Your recycling habits

8 Carbon Footprint ndex.htm
