2 Who Are We? Emory CAPS provides confidential counseling for enrolled undergraduate, graduate and professional students at Emory University. Consultation, outreach and educational workshops are provided for Emory's students, faculty, and staff. The staff at CAPS is comprised of Licensed Psychologists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Postgraduate Fellows in Psychology and Social Work, and Doctoral Psychology Interns.

3 Who Are we? Beowulf : CAPS’ Therapy Dog! She is a loveable, Native American Indian Dog with a little Golden Retriever mixed in and lives with her handler, Dr. Colleen Duffy, staff psychologist. If you feel uncomfortable around dogs for any reason, please let the CAPS front desk staff know.

4 Who We Are: Diversity Statement
The staff at CAPS values the richness of diversity and works to empower students who embody diversity in all its forms. We know that student life is a transitional period and can bring pressure and stress. We try to help students understand this period, find ways of coping with daily stressors and times of crisis, and grow from their experiences. We also work with administrators, academic departments, and other campus partners to improve accessibility and inclusivity of student support services.

8 How Much Do Services Cost?
All of the services offered at CAPS are included in the Mental Health and Counseling Fee of fully registered Emory students.  Therefore, there are no out-of- pocket costs to fully registered students. CAPS does charge students $50 for no show or late cancellation of appointments. In order to avoid a no show or late cancellation charge, students must cancel the appointment at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment by calling (day or night). If a student is assessed a no show or late cancellation charge, it will appear on their Emory bill as “No Show EUSHCS."

9 How Do I Make an Appointment?

10 What Will Happen at My First Appointment?
A therapist will obtain information about your concerns, assess your needs, provide information regarding appropriate services and facilitate the process of meeting your counseling needs through a variety of options.  The therapist will determine if it is in your best interest to be seen for brief, supportive individual counseling, couples counseling, or group counseling at CAPS or to be given a referral into the community for open-ended counseling. The therapist who meets with you will answer questions and help you throughout the process.  You may or may not have future meetings with this therapist.  If you have additional questions about the first appointment, you can call CAPS at

11 Who Will Know About My Counseling Services?
Counseling services are confidential.  Your confidential information will not be disclosed outside of CAPS without written authorization given by you, except when disclosures are legally permitted or required, including, but not limited to, situations when child abuse, elder abuse or disabled adult abuse is suspected, when the therapist has reasonable cause to believe that a client presents a danger to himself/herself or others, or in response to a valid subpoena (except for privileged communications) or court order. Your counseling sessions are not part of your academic record. If disclosed in therapy, the immigration status of students and their loved ones is confidential information.

12 What Do I Do If I’m Having an Emergency?
Speak to your resident advisor (RA) or residence hall director (RHD). Call or walk into CAPS. CAPS has on-call therapists that are available to meet with you briefly and/or for a full appointment, if necessary, each weekday between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM. After 3:30 PM, you may contact the SIS Team. Contact the Emory Student Intervention Services Team (SIS) at or at For more information about SIS, go to Call the Emory HelpLine at The HelpLine is a confidential service staffed by Emory students. The HelpLine is open from 8:30 PM-1 AM during the academic year. Text the National Crisis Text Line by sending START to Call the Emory Police Department ( ), the Emory Hospital Emergency Room ( ), the GA Crisis and Access Line ( ), the National Suicide Hotline ( ), or the DeKalb County Mental Health Service Board ( ). All of these services are available 24 hours a day.

13 What If I’m Not Ready for Formal Counseling Services?
During the academic year, you may call the Emory Helpline, a confidential, peer-run telephone hotline at   The HELPLINE is open from 8:30 PM-1 AM, 7 days per week. Text the National Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to Take an anonymous, online self evaluator: Anonymous, Online Self-Evaluator: This self-evaluation screens for thirteen of the most common mental health conditions that college students face.

14 What If I’m Ready for Counseling but Want to See Someone Off Campus?
If you have the Aetna student insurance policy, someone at CAPS or in Student Health Services Psychiatry will need to activate the referral in our electronic system. You may call (CAPS) or (Psychiatry) to have your referral activated.
