A city is a local area with an organized government that provides services to its residents. Suburbs are communities near or around cities.

37 Types of City Governments
Mayor Council The mayor is the executive branch of the city and the council is the legislative branch. Strong Mayor v. Weak Mayor Strong – mayor appoints heads of city departments Weak – council appoints heads of city departments Council Manager The elected council appoints the city manager. Commission The commissioners do the job of the executive and legislative.

39 Towns and Villages What is the purpose? Town Area smaller than a city, but larger than a village. Township Subdivision of a city that has its own government Village Smallest area with in a county. Usually from when a group is unhappy with how the county or city treats them.
