Figure 1 (A) Distal to the diverticular orifice (arrow), numerous filiform polyps involving an 8-cm segment of the sigmoid colon are noted. (B) The polyps consist of submucosal fibrovascular cores lined with normal mucosa (hematoxylin and eosin staining, ×12.5). (C) No epithelial dysplasia is identified, and chronic inflammatory cells in the lamina propria are normal in number to minimally increased (hematoxylin and eosin staining, ×40). (D) The specimen obtained at colostomy take-down also shows filiform polyps that involve a 5-cm segment of the distal descending colon.
