1 WP4– Points of discussion
H2020 AMICI Workpackage 4 - Innovation

2 WP4 Innovation – Scene Setting
From the publicity material for this event: The AMICI H2020 project is charged by the European Commission with the challenging task of building the conditions for consolidating and exploiting such collaboration to strengthen the capabilities of European companies to compete on the global market, not only as qualified suppliers of components for accelerators and big superconductor magnets, but also in the development of innovative applications in advanced sectors such as healthcare and space. “How can the coordinated Technology Infrastructures of the major European accelerator research labs help industry?”

3 Task 1: Industry Survey – Acc. Technologies
Remain focused on the industrial objective to optimise costs-performance- planning. (Some) competitors comfortable working together so long as boundaries are clearly defined. Flexibility/adaptability. One solution does not fit all. Industry wants to actively input into questionnaire before sending out. Anonymised data. Companies generally happy to have their name associated with survey collection. Some information is in the public domain – happy to have this circulated. Other information is business critical. Contributors should be able to review the output report to check sensitivities.

4 Understand technology trends
Understand technology trends. Technology roadmaps are seen as a way of promoting effective collaboration. Steer away from product developments. Highlights the need for different levels of information to attract different levels of customer maturity. Who? What? How? – define the AMICI offering in simple terms Need more information to enable informed choices Big labs run on project basis. Societal application will be more naturally driven by industrial partners. AMICI could help identify trends?

5 Task 2: Survey - Magnets Technologies
FuSuMaTech – an illustration of how industrial/RI interaction might work effectively? Technology development roadmap of RIs Technology development roadmap of industry Identify common R&D, demonstrators etc. Clear goal, funding available Can the work in WP4.1 identify similar areas of overlap in other technology areas? Get technology roadmap from RIs so industry can identify areas for future investment (WP2) Flexible (and simple) business model/framework to enable effective risk management (WP3)

6 Task 3: Good practices and barriers
IP, IP, IP. Above all, it should be “fair”. Information meetings to detail Technology Infrastructures to industry Clear presentation of the possible offerings Periodic updates Web portal: sorted by technology areas, geographical location, availability etc. Technology transfer – different models have pros/cons for both industry and RIs Identified CERN as a positive model for technology transfer. Opportunities, technologies and contacts well defined plus dedicated resource to enable TT.

7 General discussion Legal framework development should occur early in the process Alter the relationship between industry and RIs from passive to active engagement (AMICI is a first step in this process). “When you know the people, everything is easy.” Technology road-mapping should be on an industry relevant timescale (<5 years) Open innovation model could work well at a technology-driven level (rather than industry product-driven) Clear definition of roles: TIs, TFs, RIs – nomenclature can be confusing. Tailor the message to the audience. Single point of contact for access to AMICI.
