1 Food waste valorisation for sustainable chemicals, materials and fuels (EUBIS)
TD1203 Start date: 01/03/2013 End date: 31/02/2017 Year: 1st James Clark Action Chair UK

2 Scientific context and objectives (1/2)
Background / Problem statement: Management of food supply chain waste (FSCW) poor Disposal to landfill, low value animal fodder Fossil fuel dependence high Increasingly vulnerable EU economy over coming years Food supply chain waste could act as a source of carbon for the production of sustainable chemicals, materials and fuels Brief reminder of MoU objectives: To provide an integrated alternative renewable source of carbon for the production of industrially relevant bio-derived chemicals, fuels and materials via the exploration of novel and advanced routes for food supply chain waste valorisation. Background / Problem statement: [What is the scientific context and what challenges are the Action addressing?] Brief reminder of MoU objectives: [What are the Action’s objectives?]

3 Scientific context and objectives (2/2)
Research directions: Bringing together a critical mass of interdisciplinary researchers working on food waste valorisation Meetings (WGs, MC, workshops), online portal for information collection and collaboration, STSMs Food waste mapping – gathering data on the nature, volumes and timings of food waste availability to assess the most promising sources for research and eventual industrial scale-up. [How are the objectives of the MoU being achieved? Recall briefly the approach and methodology as stated in the MoU.] [Highlight the Action’s innovative work—what is its unique contribution that is not duplicated elsewhere?]

4 Working groups Pre-treatment and Extraction Bio-processing
Chemical Processing Technical and Sustainability Assessment/ Policy Analysis

5 Future Plan and Challenges
Training schools Food waste mapping International collaboration with key regions Industrial collaboration to give researchers an insight into industrial decision-making and large-scale processing to aid direction of research towards most promising feedstocks and greatest product and process opportunities [What are critical phases to be implemented or topics to be addressed for the upcoming year?]
