SENSE ORGANS Structures that carry messages about your surroundings to the Central Nervous System Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin

SCLERA Outer protective layer of the eye “White of the eye”

CORNEA Transparent protective covering of the eye Light enters
“Window of the eye”

AQUEOUS HUMOR Fluid-filled chamber behind the cornea

IRIS Circular, colored part of the eye

PUPIL Small opening in the middle of the iris through which light enters

LENS Focuses light rays entering the eye Behind the iris

VITREOUS HUMOR Large chamber behind the lens that gives the eyeball its roundish shape Filled with jelly-like fluid

RETINA Back surface of the eye that focuses light a second time
Contains light sensitive cells called RODS and CONES

RODS AND CONES... Rods react to dim light
Cones are responsible for color vision

ON THE RETINA... The image appears upside down. (lens bends light rays entering the eye) The brain must automatically turn the image right-side up quickly.

LIGHT THROUGH THE EYE Cornea, aqueous humor, pupil, lens, vitreous humor, retina, optic nerve, cerebrum

SOUND TRAVELS... Outer Ear, auditory canal, eardrum, hammer, anvil, stirrup, cochlea (liquid), auditory nerve to the cerebrum

BALANCE... When the fluid in the semicircular canals moves as the body moves, the cilia bend. Cilia send nerve impulses to the cerebellum so that the brain can signal you to catch your balance.

TASTE RECEPTORS... Found in the taste buds on your tongue

KINDS OF TASTES... Sweet Sour Bitter Salty

LARGEST SENSE ORGAN The skin

SENSE RECEPTORS IN THE SKIN...
Pressure Touch Pain Heat Cold
