4. Whole Note The Whole Note is the most basic type of note.
It has four beats no matter what time signature it is in.
In 4/4 time it takes up the whole measure.

The Half note is the next size directly smaller then the whole note.
It is half of the size of the whole note.
The half note takes up 2 beats 4/4 time.
The largest note value with a stem.

The quarter note is the next size directly smaller then the half note.
It is a quarter of the size of the whole note.
The Quarter note takes up 1 beats 4/4 time.
There can be four quarter notes in 4/4 time.
