1 30 seconds challenge To your partner, explain all you know about writing about structure in… 30 seconds. In pairs, or could do as a class

2 Recap on flowchart

3 Writing about structure
L.O. How do I discuss how a writer structures a text to interest the reader? Why are we practising this skill? Useful for lit exam and Paper 1 of language exam

4 Q3 - Structure How has the writer structured the text to interest you as a reader? You could write about: how the extract starts/develops/ends the narrative perspective how sentences and paragraphing are used. any other structural features [8 marks] Reminder of Q3 of English Lang GCSE Paper 1

5 Individual challenge Today you will be writing about the structure of a passage from another Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist. Step 1 – read and highlight the passage Step 2 – write your response

6 Oliver Twist Oliver Twist is set in a Victorian town.
Oliver is an orphan and when he is nine-years-old he is sent to the workhouse. This is a cruel place and the boys are starving – but they have a plan.

7 How will I structure my response
Use your flow chart and the bullet points on the question paper Use PEE paragraphs Point about a structural feature (for example, it could be the beginning of the passage) Example – describe the feature, using quotations if necessary Explanation – explain the effect on the reader and how it interests the reader

8 Example The use of flashback between the beginning and the end of the text also creates interest for the reader as it helps us to understand more about Scrooge’s character development. When we see the positive image of the warm, scene which was ‘full of comfort’ we are immediately contrasting this with the ‘torture’ that Scrooge was feeling watching it. The juxtaposition of Scrooge’s feelings with the setting in the past creates interest as we get the idea that Scrooge has missed out on happiness due to his cold-heartedness and focus on money.
