1 Analysing Structure L.O. To develop confidence in analysing structure.
To understand the different steps to take when analysing the structure of an extract.

2 Q3 - Structure How has the writer structured the text to interest you as a reader? You could write about: the narrative perspective how the extract starts/develops/ends how sentences and paragraphing are used. any other structural features [8 marks] What kind of things would you write about to answer this question from Language Paper 1?

3 How would you analyse the structure of this text
How would you analyse the structure of this text? Discuss with your partner – use the Structure flowchart to help Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

4 Structure Flowchart What happens at the BEGINNING of the text? How does the writer set the scene? What happens in the MIDDLE of the text? How does the writer create a change? What PATTERNS are there in the text? Are there any MOTIFS? ECHOING? REPETITION? CONTRASTS? What is the VIEWPOINT/PERSPECTIVE of the text? How does the writer show this? Does it stay the same or does it change? When does it change? Why does it change? Print out for students to stick in their exercise books How does the writer use PARAGRAPHS and SENTENCES in the text? How does the writer link them together? What happens at the END of the text? How does the writer keep the reader’s interest at the end of the text?

5 How would you analyse the structure of this text
How would you analyse the structure of this text? Discuss with your partner – use the Structure flowchart to help Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

6 Let’s look at Dickens’ structure in this shortened extract
"Spirit!" said Scrooge, "show me no more! They were in another scene and place. But now a knocking at the door was heard. "Belle," said the husband, turning to his wife with a smile. And now Scrooge looked on more attentively than ever. "Spirit!" said Scrooge in a broken voice, "remove me from this place.“… He turned upon the Ghost. "Leave me! Take me back. Haunt me no longer!" Beginning Middle Patterns – language/punctuation Perspective Ending

7 Q3 - Structure How has the writer structured the text to interest you as a reader? You could write about: the narrative perspective how the extract starts/develops/ends how sentences and paragraphing are used. any other structural features [8 marks]

8 Group Task You are now going to look at the structure of the whole text focusing on different structural features. Each member of the group will have a different feature to look for. You will each need a different colour highlighter. Highlight at least 5 different examples of your feature. Annotate what the effect of your structural feature is on creating interest for the reader. Give students the text on A3. They need 4 different colour highlighters

9 Groups Group 5 Person 1 Person 2 Person 3 Person 4

10 Group roles Links between the beginning, middle and end Patterns of language/motifs/symbols/contrasts/ repetition/ echoing Changes in the text – time/viewpoint/perspective Paragraphs and sentences – how is the text constructed? How does this add to the pace of the text/

11 Feedback Use the structural flowchart to help you structure your feedback. How can we ‘capture’ this learning? Challenge: Can you create a rhyme or a mnemonic to help us remember how to analyse structure?
