1 ANNOUNCEMENTS 2/20/18

2 BLACK HISTORY Month Who Am I?
I am the first physician to ever perform heart surgery and became recognized worldwide for this accomplishment. I pioneered medical training for Black doctors and nurses which had never before been available to Blacks. In 1893 I performed an operation on a street fighter in Chicago who received a chest wound in an artery a fraction of an inch from the heart. The opening of the patient’s chest and the repair of the wound saved his life.

3 BLACK HISTORY month Who Am I?
Because of primitive social and medical circumstances existing during this era, I had to treat patients in their homes and conduct occasional surgeries on kitchen tables. I founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the nation’s first interracial hospital and training school for black nurses and interns. My position at Provident Hospital was publicly championed and supported by the famed Frederick Douglass. I established a nursing school for Blacks in Washington D.C. and surgical clinics at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

4 BLACK HISTORY month Who Am I
I am the only Black original member of the American College of Surgeons founded in 1913. My lifelong ambition was to become a surgeon, but there were no pre-med courses in college at the time. I owned a barber shop where I met a surgeon who invited me to “read medicine” in his office. After two years of reading medicine, I entered Chicago Medical College and graduated in 1883. I was born 1856 and died in 1931.
