3 Topic VII: Exponents and Polynomials

4 Exponents and Polynomials
Objective: Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Essential Question: How powers of 10 can improve accuracy when performing operations with very large or very small numbers?

5 Exponents and Polynomials
Vocabulary Exponential Form - A way to write a number or expression in a more compact structure using exponents. Squaring a Number - When you multiply a number by itself. Base Number - A number that is to be raised to a power.

6 Exponents and Polynomials
Vocabulary Scientific Notation – Is a shorthand way to write numbers using powers of 10. For example: = 1.73 X 105 Exponent - A number used to indicate how many times to multiply the base by itself. Power - The product obtained by multiplying a number by itself one or more times.
