8 Homework Homework will generally be given 4 nights a week.
Assignments will be a review of previously taught material. All homework is due the next day. Missed assignments will result in loss of recess to complete the homework. Since we only have one recess it is imperative that homework be completed nightly and returned to school the next day.

9 Reading Homework In order to practice fluency and comprehension, reading homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. The students will work with the same story the entire week. Instructions and a recording graph will be sent home each week. On Monday the students will make a prediction and read the story for 1 minute. On Tuesday through Wednesday they will read the story for 1 minute each night On Thursday they will read the story again for 1 minute and answer a couple comprehension questions.

10 Study Guides There will be tests and quizzes in Science and Social Studies since these subjects will be graded on report cards in 3rd grade. Before any test, a study guide will be distributed and the test will be announced in the assignment book a week before the test. The study guide will include all needed information for tests. A Jeopardy game will be on my webpage that reviews necessary information for tests.

11 Assignment Books Student are required to write their homework each night in their assignment books. Please be sure to check books on a daily basis and sign them Monday through Thursday. I check these books everyday for assignments and signatures.

15 Attendance Excuse cards or a note must be returned within 3 days or a fine will be imposed. Work missed during the day will be sent home with another student or can be picked up in the office. It is extremely important for students to be in school every day unless they are ill.

16 What is Co-Teaching? Co-Teaching is when two teachers work together with groups of students; sharing the planning, organization, delivery, and assessment of instruction, as well as the physical space. Types of co-teaching models One teach, one observe One teach, one drift Parallel (both presents same lesson) Alternative (both presents same lesson just in different ways) Station Team

17

18 Benefits of Co-Teaching
Brings diverse expertise Provides specialized learning instruction strategies for ALL students to maximize their learning potential Opportunity for more small group and individualized instruction Increased opportunities for reinforcement More effective behavior management Most importantly, increased student success!!!

19 Curriculum Reading- Reading Wonders is the first and only reading program designed specifically for the Common Core State Standards for Reading/Language Arts Math- This is our second year using the enVisions math program Spelling/Writing/Grammar- contained within the Wonders program Science- We will cover topics such as ecosystems, matter, ideas and inventions, and space Social Studies- Maps, Formation of the United State, Landforms

20 AIMSWEB 3 times a year all third grade students will be given a reading fluency assessment that is recorded on the report card. The fall benchmark is 87 words per minute. Summer reading loss can profoundly effect the student performance from the end of second grade to the beginning of third and result in large losses. This is easily prevented by encouraging daily reading ( it is not too late- we still have a few weeks before benchmarking )

21 HAC (Home Access Center)
Each guardian will be given a password to access your child’s grades online from the Hamburg Area website. This is for all grades 3-5 You will be able to check on your child’s grades in each graded subject area

22 PSSA Testing All PA 3rd grade students will be required to take the PSSA tests in the spring. We will begin preparing for state tests after the winter holiday. Students will also be taking 4-sight tests to determine areas of instruction that are needed 4 times each year.

23 Volunteers and Visitors
If you wish to volunteer in the classroom on a regular basis or if you wish to chaperone the field trip, new state regulations require you to have PA clearances. This process is lengthy and can take anywhere from a few weeks to a month or longer. These clearances are provided free to all volunteers. Forms will be on the Hamburg Area website shortly for you to use.
