2 Egypt Egypt is known as the “gift of the Nile.”
The Nile River flows north and is 4,100 miles long! The Nile River empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Every summer, the Nile would flood, but when the river receded, it left behind fertile black mud, silt.

3 Egypt: Where?

4 Egypt: Beliefs Egyptian society was polytheistic.
Re (Ra), the god of the sun, was the main god. Kings of Egypt: pharaohs Egyptians believed pharaohs were descended from gods: god-kings. Egypt was a theocracy: a government based on religious authority.

5 Egypt: The People Many Egyptians were skilled farmers, using the Nile River to help grow their crops. It is thought that Egyptian farmers helped build the pyramids, resting places after death for their pharaohs.

7 Hieroglyphics Ancient Egyptians used a writing style known as hieroglyphics. At first, pictures stood for ideas, but the system changed so that pictures stood for sounds as well. We do not know what the language sounded like!

8 Hieroglyphics Papyrus: a tall reed that grows in the Nile; used by the Egyptians to make a kind of paper Hieroglyphs, or symbols, were not easily translated, until Napoleon, the French dictator, and French archaeologists discovered the Rosetta Stone in Egypt in 1799.

9 Graffiti Markings, such as initials, slogans, or drawings, written, spray-painted, or drawn on a sidewalk, wall of a building, etc.

Choose the name of your phyle (group of 200 workers who built the pyramids). Write the name of your phyle in hieroglyphics on your poster board. Using hieroglyphics, create some graffiti to represent your phyle.

12 Old Kingdom Upper and Lower Egypt were untied under Narmer (Scorpion King). The Great Pyramids of Giza for Pharaoh Khufu and the Sphinx.

13 New Kingdom King Tut was known as the “boy pharaoh.” Egyptians mummified the remains of their dead and even animals! Hatsepshut was a female pharaoh. Alexandria later became the knew emerging city of Egypt.

16 Maya The Mayan civilization is different in many ways from the 4 main Ancient River Valley civilizations: highlands instead of plains, not as old, and Western Hemisphere. Though, Mayan mathematics and astrology are considered superior to many.
