1 Static electricity: define

2 Static electricity Static: stationary Electricity: charge
Static electricity is the result of an imbalance between negative and positive charges in an object. These charges can build up on the surface of an object until they find a way to be released or discharged

3 Coulomb's Law: can you draw 2 graphs, 1 to show force of attraction versus distance of separation, and 2, to show strength of charge versus force of attraction

5 What did we learn about conductors and insulators?
Can we list a few of each?

6 Simply put Most metals are good electrical conductors, most non-metals are not. Metals such as copper are ideal conductors, while most non-metallic solids are said to be good insulators, having extremely high resistance to the flow of charge through them. In a conductor, electric current can flow freely, in an insulator it cannot Conductor = metal or metal like properties Insulator= non metal or non-metal like properties

8 Starter Find 3 Dangers of static electricity and 3 ways to reduce the chances of an accident related to these dangers.

9 How can we imagine the ‘flow of electrons’?

10 Electric Current: how do we calculate
Means a flow of charge (like a water current indicates flow of water) Electric current is based on quantity of charge per second Current (I) = charge (q) / time (t) I = q/t Unit is coulomb per second, called ampere, or amp for short

11 Calculating Current in Ampere (amps)

12 Voltage: Voltage is a force that makes electricity move through a wire.
An electrical circuit contains a device, such as a battery or generator, that acts as a source of energy as it forces charge out of one terminal, through the wires of the circuit, and back into the other terminal.

13 Resistance An electric current flows when electrons move through a conductor, such as a metal wire The moving electrons can collide with the different molecules in the metal, or metals of varying size and density. This makes it more difficult for the current to flow, and causes resistance. R=V/I Resistance units are ohms ()

14 V = I x R (ohms law) What is the voltage (V) of a small appliance if the current (I) is 12 A and the resistance (R) is 10 Ω? Find the voltage (V) if the resistance (R) is 25 Ω and the current (I) is 5 A. Find the current (I) if the voltage (V) is 230 V and the resistance (R) is 20 Ω.

15 Electrical power Power is a measure of how quickly energy is transferred. The unit of power is the watt (W). You can work out power using this equation: Power output is determined by voltage, current, time Power =Voltage x Current Example If the current is 5 A and the potential difference is 12 V, the power is…
