1 General Meeting cern, 10-12/10/2017
WP 3 CREATIONS Demonstrators University of Birmingham

2 Summary of Existing Demonstrators
Clocks and Gears Workshop Particle Physics Workshop Particle Physics Masterclass Physics and Fine Arts Workshop Particle Dance Workshop CREATIONS 5th Meeting – CERN October 10-12, 2017

3 Clocks and Gears Workshop
A workshop explaining: how clocks worked through the ages; from sundials and hour-glasses to ancient Greek water clocks that used gears the mathematics and science of interlocking gears Hands-on activities: making a wind-up clock with fifteen gear wheels discovering the scientific pattern between the length of the clock’s pendulum and the time of its swing

4 Particle Physics Workshop
A workshop explaining: How particle physicists discover the constituents of matter through particle collisions The families of particles in the standard model How particles interact with one another Hands-on activities: making a model of a subatomic particle using simple materials e.g. plastic balls, plasticine, decorations Creating an artistic piece (poetry, music, dance, drama etc.) from a particle interaction diagram

5 Particle Physics Masterclass
A workshop explaining: The standard model How the ATLAS detector works The importance of particle interaction and the fundamental forces in nature Hands-on activities: Using the MINERVA software to identify types of collisions in the ATLAS detector Calculating the mass of the Z boson from the collision data

6 Physics and Fine Arts Workshop
A workshop explaining: The standard model and particle interactions How particle detectors work Hands-on activities: Experimenting with various drawing techniques, e.g. charcoal, and more experimental approaches Two- and three-dimensional approaches, using glue gun on various surfaces , wire, air-drying clay, etc. Shadows on a screen movement filmed/photographed

7 Particle Dance Workshop
A workshop explaining: The standard model Matter and anti-matter Interactions of particles: scattering and annihilation/pair-production Hands-on activities: Group choreography developed by each student adding a move, inspired by the assigned particle’s properties. Small group choreographies, narrating a interaction, annihilation/pair-production or scattering and concluding the group choreography

8 Ideas for New Demonstrators
A number of new demonstrators are expected from the 10 UK teachers that participated in the CPD course at CERN (in collaboration with STFC, Ogden Trust, and CERN) The concept is to get the teachers engaged in developing new demonstrators, putting in practice what was discussed in the course. The teachers have agreed to produce these demonstrators, as a prerequisite for participation in the CPD. We will follow up with them early in the new year, and will help them complete the ideas they have. CREATIONS 5th Meeting – CERN October 10-12, 2017
