7 Nearly all living things obtain energy either directly or indirectly from the sun. Autotrophs make their own food using the sun. Heterotrophs will eat autotrophs or they will eat other heterotrophs. Thus, all energy originates back to energy from the sun. Fill in the blanks on your paper using the sun, a zebra, grass, and a lion.

9 Photosynthesis (plants only)
Photosynthesis (p/s) is the process by which plants make food/sugar from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. This process occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells and happens in two different stages.

10 Stage 1: Capturing the Sun’s Energy
Energy is captured in the first stage of photosynthesis. The chlorophyll inside of the chloroplasts allows this to happen. Chlorophyll is a green pigment.

11 Stage 2: Using Energy to Make Food
Now, the cells use the captured energy to make food/sugar. Along with the energy, the cell will also use water and carbon dioxide. Water enters the plant through the roots. Carbon dioxide enters the plant through small openings in the leaves called stomata. This happens by diffusion.

The energy, water, and carbon dioxide undergo chemical reactions. These reactions produce two products: food/sugar called glucose and oxygen.

15 The chemical equation for photosynthesis is:
6CO2 + 6H2O –light energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 Plants will do two things with the glucose they make. They will use some of the glucose for food to make energy and they will store the rest of it. When you eat fruits and veggies, you are eating the stored glucose. The oxygen that is made will leave the plant through the stomata by diffusion.

All living things need energy. Cellular respiration is the process of how cells make energy. During respiration, cells break down food molecules to release energy, specifically glucose molecules. These are the same glucose molecules that are made in photosynthesis. Glucose is a type of carbohydrate and it can give your body a lot of energy. Just like photosynthesis, respiration occurs in two different stages.

23 Stage 1: Cytoplasm During the first stage, glucose is broken down into small molecules by chemical reactions. A small amount of energy is released in this stage.

24 Stage 2: Mitochondria The glucose molecules that were broken down in the cytoplasm move into the mitochondria. The glucose molecules are broken down even further in the mitochondria. The chemical reactions that occur here require oxygen. Oxygen enters your cells by diffusion when you breathe. These chemical reactions create a great amount of energy.

25 After respiration has occurred, there are waste products that are produced. The two wastes produced by respiration are carbon dioxide and water. Your body gets rid of both of these mainly through exhaling.
