1 Study guide questions #14-#16
Fahrenheit 451 Pages 26-45 Study guide questions #14-#16

2 Today’s Objectives: SWBAT discuss/find examples of allusion found in Fahrenheit 451. SWBAT analyze the concepts of conformity and rebellion as illustrated in the book. Students will contrast Clarisse McClellan and Mildred Montag. Students will discuss the quotation, “Play the man,…” and will analyze why Bradbury chose to use it in the novel.

3 Bell ringer Contrast Clarisse McClellan and Mildred Montag.
Contrast- to compare in order to show unlikeness or differences; note the opposite natures.

4 She is very superficial!
Mildred Montag “Literally not just one wall but, three! And the uncles, the aunts, the cousins, the nieces, the nephews, that lived in those walls, the gibbering pack of tree-apes that said nothing, nothing, nothing and said it loud, loud, loud.” “Will you turn the parlor off?” He asked. “That’s my family.” “Will you turn it off for a sick man?” “I’ll turn it down.” She is very superficial!

5 Mildred’s physical appearance
“…her hair burnt by chemicals to a brittle straw, her eyes with a kind of cataract…the reddened pouting lips, the body as thin as a praying mantis from dieting, and her flesh like white bacon.”

6 Characterization Clarisse thinks in terms of feelings, happiness, and freedom. She notices nature, beauty, and the feelings of others!

7 Clarisse talks about her friends. (pp. 27 and 28)
“People don’t talk about anything…They name a lot of cars or clothes or swimming pools mostly and say how swell! But they all say the same things and nobody says anything different from anyone else.” (No depth!) “I’m afraid of children my own age. They kill each other. Six of my friends have been shot in the last year alone. Ten of them died in car wrecks.” (They don’t value life!)

8 #14.(a) What happens when Montag’s team is called to a fire in an old house? (pp. 32-36)
They hear the woman who lives there say: “Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” They pour kerosene over all the books in the house. Montag hides a book under his arm. The firemen prepare to remove the old woman, but she refuses to go.

9 How is this situation different from most of their calls? (page 34)
Most of the time the police entered first and “adhesive-taped the victim’s mouth and bandaged him off into their glittering beetle cars,” so by the time that the firemen arrived they found the house empty. “You weren’t hurting anyone, you were hurting only things! And since things really couldn’t be hurt, since things felt nothing, and things don’t scream or whimper, as this woman might begin to scream and cry out, there was nothing to tease your conscience later. You were simply cleaning up. Janitorial work, essentially. Everything to its proper place. Quick with the kerosene! Who’s got a match!

10 Martyr=a person who is put to death or endures great suffering on behalf of any belief, principle, or cause Instead, she lights the fire herself, preferring to burn to death in the flames, like a martyr, for a principle.

11 #14. (b) What literary term is the quotation spoken by the old woman?
“Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” ALLUSION: a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature. Allusions are often indirect or brief references to well-known characters or events.

12 Allusion The quote is an allusion to the supposed last words of Englishman Hugh Latimer (c ), who was burned at the stake for heresy, along with his friend Nicholas Ridley. Both Ridley and Latimer were bishops. (This information was revealed later by Captain Beatty.) Heresy-opinion or doctrine at variance with the orthodox or accepted doctrine, especially of a church or religious system.

13 Bishop Hugh Latimer Latimer began to preach publicly on the
need for the translation of the Bible into English. This was a dangerous move as the first translation of the New Testament had recently been banned. In early 1528, Latimer was called before a Cardinal and he was given an admonition and a warning. However, when Edward VI's sister Mary I came to the throne, he was tried for his beliefs and teachings in Oxford and imprisoned. In October 1555 he was burned at the stake outside Balliol College, Oxford.

14 #15. What does Captain Beatty say about the quotation when they return to the firehouse? (pp. 37-39)
He is able to repeat the quote word for word. He says, “A man named Latimer said that to a man named Nicholas Ridley, as they were being burnt alive at Oxford, for heresy, on October 16, 1555.” “I’m full of bits and pieces, most fire captains have to be. Sometimes I surprise myself.”

15 #15. (b) What does the incident show?
The incident shows that Captain Beatty was once educated; he had learned ideas and the power of human resistance, and he recognizes resistance or rebellion when he sees it.

16 Allusion-Now you try it!
Find the biblical allusion on the bottom of page 35. THE TOWER OF BABEL

17 The Tower of Babel “You can’t ever have my books,” she said.
“You know the law,” said Beatty. “Where’s your common sense? None of those books agree with each other. You’ve been locked up here for years with a regular damned Tower of Babel. Snap out of it! The people in those books never lived! Come on now!” Up until this point in the Bible, the whole world had one language - one common speech for all people.

18 #16. What happens when Montag gets home from the old woman’s? (page 38)
He feels that his hands have become infected from handling the book, and he knows that the infection will spread and poison him. He hides the book beneath his pillow. Mildred and Montag talk, but they cannot really connect with each other. It is revealed that the people next door, including the girl Clarisse, have disappeared.

19 #16. (b) What does he sense in the dark outside?
The Mechanical Hound, which signifies that he is being followed and spied on.
