1 Energy Demand and the Energy Gap

2 Lesson Outcomes Define primary, secondary, renewable, non–renewable and sustainable energy. Describe trends in global energy demand, and the pattern of global energy production and consumption. Illustrate the energy gap.

3 Assessment Revise your notes on Economic Activity for a test next week.

4 What is the difference between:
Primary and secondary energy Primary energy is found in nature before conversion or transformation such as coal, natural gas and crude oil. Secondary energy refers to the more convenient forms of energy which are transformed from other, primary energy sources through energy conversion processes. Examples are electricity, which is transformed from primary sources such as coal, raw oil, fuel oil, natural gas, wind.

5 What is the difference between:
Renewable and non – renewable energy Renewable energy is energy which is generated from natural sources i.e. sun, wind, rain, tides and can be generated as and when required. They are available in plenty. Non-Renewable energy is energy which is taken from the sources that are available on the earth they are called non renewable because they cannot be re-generated within a short span of time. Non-renewable sources exist in the form of fossil fuels, natural gas, oil and coal.

6 Energy supply and demand
Describe the pattern of energy consumption shown on map 4.16 What is the global pattern of energy supply and demand Which countries have the highest demand for energy and why? List some of the highest energy producing countries in the world EXT: study figure 4.17 – describe what this tells you about global energy consumption

7 Your task What is the energy gap?
a gap created because the loss of energy caused by phasing out the use of fossil fuels is greater than the amount of energy that is being developed from new, low carbon sources. On a blank map of the world, illustrate and identify some of the countries that have an energy gap using figures 4.16 and 4.18. Define the terms : Energy surplus and Energy deficit

8 Extension Describe the main features of the distribution of energy production shown in figure 4.18

9 Taboo Renewable energy Saudia Arabia Energy gap Primary energy
Non- renewable energy Hydroelectric Power Secondary energy Energy consumption Energy Deficit Energy Surplus
