3 TEST day: Wednesday, October 14
All Freshmen, sophomore and junior students will take an exam on this day. Freshmen will have the opportunity to sign up for the PSAT exam or they will take a PSAT 8/9 test. Sophomores will have the opportunity to sign up for the PSAT or they will take an ACT practice test Juniors will have the opportunity to sign up for the PSAT exam or they will take an ACT practice test. All students who choose to take the PSAT must register in advance!!!

4 What Is the PSAT? Standardized test that measures academic skills
Serves as an entry point to National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions (11th graders) Approximately 3.5 million students participate each year (44% eleventh-graders and 56% tenth-graders or younger)

5 What Skills are Tested on PSAT?
Critical Reading Mathematics Writing Skills The test assesses the academic skills that you’ve developed over the years, primarily through your course work. These skills are considered essential for success in high school and college.

6 Why Take The Test? Prepare students for the SAT (college admission exam) Start getting ready for college Feedback on academic skills Enter scholarship competitions . . serves as an entry point to National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions (11th Graders) Find out which AP courses you might be ready for College and career planning tool Connects students with information about colleges (admissions, scholarships and financial aid) Preparation for the SAT: Same question types, format, and testing conditions as the SAT. Scholarship and recognition opportunities: Entry point for National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs (usually in 11th grade) and other scholarship and recognition opportunities, including the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Feedback on academic skills: Personalized feedback on critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills, including specific suggestions for improvement. College and career planning tools: Free access to My College QuickStart™, an online tool that provides personalized information and interactive college and career planning resources. Admissions and financial aid information: Students who say “Yes” to Student Search Service® when they take the test will be eligible to receive free information from colleges and scholarship services.

8 PSAT Student guide Take the practice test in the Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT. Understand scoring and “educated guessing.” Familiarize yourself with the test’s format, questions types, and directions. Student Guides are located in the counseling department and can be picked up once you’ve registered online!
