1 Subculture: The meaning of style
Dick Hebdige

2 Holiday in the sun Summer of 1976 in Great Britain
Drought in the country “Economic categories, cultural and natural phenomena were confounded with more than customary abandon until the drought had metaphysical significance.” Metaphysical significance

3 Drought and Its’ Effects
Homes were threathen. Notting Hill Carnival, Carribbean Festival, which is typically peaceful tradition, lead to outbreak of violence between “…angry black youth” and policeman. “Hordes of young black Britons did the Soweto dash across the nation’s television screens and conjured up fearful images of other Negroes, other confrontations, other ‘long, hot summers’.” Soweto dash: South African Dance

4 The aftermath of the Caribbean festival turning and ending in violence led to the idea of Negro creativity being, in a sense, disregarded. Punk music made its debut during this summer. It became more popular around Britain. Punk Music Combined a wide range of music into one. Since the mixture had happened, it did become unstable, according to Hebdige. There began to be negative connotations that went along with different music styles in order to weed them out of the culture.

5 Connotations Glam rock was associated with narcissism
Nihilism was associated with gender confusion American Punk was associated with aesthetics Reggae was associated with being exotic and too dangerous.

6 Origin of music Punk became popular through the mixture of different types of music. It reconciled with two different types of music making punk unique Reggae Rock All music is in some way related to one another.

7 Reggae influence Even though we have these connotations about music, it still has made an impact on others positively. Rotten preferred reggae music and although he insisted on the relative autonomy of punk and reggae, he displayed knowledge of more reggae songs during the 1970’s. Many punk groups were inspired by the visual and sound of the black Jamaican street style.

8 Music has not changed overtime, and we still tend to face some of these challenges with music today.
What are other types of music that may have conveyed a negative connotation and why?

9 Bob Marley : Three Little Birds
David Bowie: Changes
