2 History: Founded in 1993 in St. Louis Missouri originally known as the St. Louis Bread Co. Company purchased by Au Bon Pain Co. a recognized company within the Bakery-café industry The company renamed to Panera Bread in 1997, and with growing success, sells its remaining shares of Au Bon Pain Co. in 1999 Company explains; “By 1997, it was clear that Panera Bread had the potential to become one of the leading brands in the nation.
