1 Persuasive/Opinion Writing

2 Persuasive/Opinion writing is defined as presenting reasons and examples to influence action or thought. Effective persuasive writing requires a writer to state clearly an opinion and to supply reasons and specific examples that support the opinion.

3 Persuasive/Opinion Writing
Objective for today: Breaking down the “Beginning” Breaking down the “Middle” Breaking down the “End”

4 Persuasive/Opinion Plan
*The PLAN is very much like that of the Explanatory/Informative Plan. There are just a few differences. See if you can spot them as we move through the ppt. B: C.A.T. M: AP/FF E: T.R.R.P.

5 B: C.A.T. B – Beginning (This is paragraph #1)
C – Catch (Use a sentence starter. This sentence is here to catch your readers attention. It is a VERY important sentence, so make it a good one.) A – Ask (use the prompt to make a sentence or ask a question) T – Tell (★★in regards to the prompt, state your opinion★★)

6 M: AP/FF M – Middle (This is paragraph #2)
AP – Authors Purpose (Your are telling what the passage(s) are all about, basically the main idea. We have suggested the sentence starter, “These passages focus on..” You do not have to use this, but it is a good option.) FF – Fact Finding (★★you are including facts from the passage that support your opinion. You should include at least three per passage and cite the authors name.★★)

7 E: T.R.R.P E – End (This is paragraph #3)
T – Transition – Use a transition word or phrase with a comma, R – Recap – You retold the main point by answering your original question from the first paragraph. (transition/recap make up one sentence) R – Retell - Tell one more point or retell the main idea. P – Punch - You need a powerful punch to leave your readers with one last great thought about your topic.

8 EDITING EDITING is part of every type of writing. Things to check for:
The beginning of my sentences and all proper nouns have CAPITAL letters. I INDENTED all of my paragraphs. I have THREE (or more) separate paragraphs. I have checked my SPELLING. I have reread and used synonyms for OVERUSED words. I have correct PUNCTUATION at the end of my sentences.
