2. Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the UK’s biggest charities.
We help people affected by an illness called cancer.

3. Our charity has been around for a long time.
This is Douglas Macmillan. Douglas’ father sadly died of cancer when he was a young man. Douglas was so upset by his father's illness that he decided to start a charity to try and help other people with cancer.
That was just over 100 years ago (1911). Since then, Macmillan Cancer Support has helped millions of people affected by cancer.

4. Cancer can be very tough
Cancer can be very tough. People going through cancer often feel scared and alone. And their family and friends might be very worried too.
When you’re worried or feel alone its good to have someone to turn to. Someone who can listen and help.
That’s why Macmillan is here. Our team is here to support people with cancer, as well as their families and friends.
We do this in lots of ways…

5. We fund special nurses called ‘Macmillan nurses’ who care for people all the way through their cancer treatment.

6. We have a phone line which anyone affected by cancer can call
We have a phone line which anyone affected by cancer can call. Our cancer experts answer people’s questions and worries, or just listen if they need to chat.

7. And our team of volunteers help people living with cancer with everyday things like shopping or a lift to hospital.

8. Macmillan is a charity so we can only provide these services thanks our amazing supporters who donate money or fundraise for us.
Perhaps you’ve heard of our biggest fundraising event, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. On one day in September, people get together at their school, work or home and sell drinks and treats to raise money for Macmillan.
