2 Christmas is the most popular family holiday in many countries
Christmas is the most popular family holiday in many countries. Christmas is a very old festival.This is a unique time when people try to be nice, friendly and generous.

3 In Poland Christmas starts on December 24-th
In Poland Christmas starts on December 24-th. In Poland we buy an decorate the Christmas tree a few days before Chistmas.

4 Also in England there are many days of preparations before
Christmas. Streets are lit by coloured lamps; shops are full of people buying presents and choosing Christmas cards. In England people also decorate Christmas tree.

5 In Poland and in England people send Christmas cards to family and friends and prepare special Christmas food. People buy presents for all they love!

6 In England there are the annual parties in many work places
In England there are the annual parties in many work places. Both in Poland and England shops and banks close earlier. On 24 December late in the evening some people go to church to attend the so called “midnight mass”.

In Poland the day before Christmas is unique one. People believe that everything that might happen on it might infuence the whole year to come. Some people say that if you ask for food on that day, you will be hungry throughout the year.

8 In Poland people sit at Christmas table when the first star appears in the sky.

9 In England children hang up stockings at the head of their beds as they believe that Santa Claus visits their house and leaves wonderful presents. But in Poland Santa Claus puts presents under the Christmas tree.

10 Polish children open their presents on 24 December ufter supper but in England children open their presents early in the morning on 25 December.

In Poland we have the custom about the number of dishes. Traditionally there should be twelve of them and they must all be tasted.

12 In Poland the most popular dishes are:
Red borsch,pies or sour cabbage with mushroms, fish {usually carp},and poppy – seed cake. Before the family starts eating, all itsmembers shere the holy wafer.

13 In Britan Christmas dinner traditionaly consists of roast turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding.

In Poland people also have lot of fun.On that day carol – singers dressed as an angel, a devil, King Herod or Death visit people’s houses. They sing and play various scenes from the Bible.

16 The 26 December in England is called Boxing Day
The 26 December in England is called Boxing Day. It is celebrated as a bank holiday. On this day people give presents of money to paperboys or dustmen. They visit their friends or organise parties. Also in Poland people visit their family or friends. They spend much time at the table talking or singing carols.
