Page 18 Objectives – Students will… differentiate Duties and Responsibilities understand the benefit of community service embrace tolerance by accepting the fact that many different people have a stake in this nation

3 Duties of Citizenship Duties = MUSTS OF CITIZENSHIP, required to do…by law.

4 1. Obey the law Citizens must understand that laws are for the common good. Ex: Traffic Laws Citizens must be aware of laws that affect their activities and must follow them. Ignorance of the law is now excuse.

5 2. Pay taxes Government must raise money in order to provide services for the benefit of all citizens

6 3. Defend the Nation 18 year old men must register for the Selective Service ( the Draft) Their names are placed on a list, to be called up in case of national crisis. Should women be on that list too??

7 4. Serve in Court In order for the legal system to be fair, verdicts often come from a jury of our peers. People avoiding jury duty are interfering with the rights of the accused. Prospective jurors can be excused if they prove an unusual hardship

8 5. Attend School All of society benefits from an educated population.
Society suffers from ignorance. It is the legal requirement of parents to ensure their children attend school.

9 Responsibilities of Citizenship
These are the SHOULDS of citizenship

10 1. Be an Informed Citizen Citizens cannot be effective with their freedoms of speech, assembly, suffrage without being informed

11 2. Respect the Rights of Others
Citizens should be aware that others share this nation, their rights must be respected and observed

12 3. Contribute to the common good
Taking care of your own property How does this help?? Volunteering in your community Adopt a highway, etc Donating time and Money (be careful)

Be careful to whom you donate (scams) Volunteerism Americans have a long history of volunteerism and are encouraged to do so by government National Service Programs Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, etc.

This was the first time that Peace Corps volunteers were deployed domestically. They were not working in foreign countries. They are working with FEMA, a U.S. agency. Their dedication to volunteer work both in the United States and abroad is consistent with patriotic values.

18 Why was the deployment of Peace Corps volunteers to New Orleans Unusual?
Dozens of volunteers were deployed. Peace Corps volunteers are usually deployed overseas. Volunteers were deployed for the first time in forty-five years. The volunteers were deployed to help in relief and reconstruction efforts.
