Learning intentions: We are learning about areas that are sparsely and densely populated. Success criteria: I can describe and explain the reasons for areas that are sparsely populated giving named examples. I can describe and explain places that are densely populated giving named examples.

The population of the world is increasing In the last 250 years the increase has been very rapid Now the world’s population is over seven billion

There are some places where many people live There are other parts of the world where few people live

Places where many people live are called densely populated These include places like New York City

Parts of China can be very crowded too So can cities such as Rio de Janeiro in Brazil

There are other areas where hardly anyone lives These are places which are difficult for people to survive The Himalaya mountains

Or the Andes in South America Where the peaks rise to 20,000 feet above sea level People live in the narrow valley bottoms

Or in the Rain forests of the Amazon Basin The jungle is too hot and damp to live in

This place is too hot for people to live And there is very little water from rain that hardly ever falls Where is this place?

This is Uluru in Australia Or as we have called it - Ayres Rock

11 Population studies: Introduction
And there are places which are too cold Like Siberia Or The South Pole

12 So remember Densely populated is crowded Sparsely populated is quite empty
