Responding to the Literature - Period 1
Le Morte d’Arthur Responding to the Literature - Period 1

Recall 1.) First, King Arthur dreamed that he fell among snakes and other creatures. Then Sir Gawain warned King Arthur that if he were to fight Sir Mordred he would die. 2.)The accident was that one of the Knights brought out his sword to kill a snake and the other knights thought he was signaling to fight. 3.)After the Knights begin to fight because of the accident, they fight until night time and on both sides most of the knights are dead, and King Arthur wants to kill Sir Mordred but Sir Lucan and Sir Bedivere tried to convince King Arthur not to fight or he will die, but King Arthur goes after him anyway. A hundred thousand died. 4.)Arthur asked Sir Bedivere to throw his sword, Exalibur, into the water. 5.)The last time Sir Bedivere see’s King Arthur is when King Arthur leaves on a barge.

Interpret 6. His dream foreshadows how after the battle his leadership is going to change. The chair represents power and the serpent represents battle and the issue that starts the battle—a snake bite. 7. Arthur and Mordred’s mutual distrust play a big role in triggering the battle. Mordred angers Arthur and gathers an army to fight him, Mordred wants some sort of revenge against Arthur (his possibly estranged father.) 8. Arthur is bravein battle. When the battle started “He rode to join his party.” If he stayed there and he would be killed by Sir Mordred but fought anyway. 9.Bedivere is being selfish and unloyal because he want the sword to himself because it has many jewels and precious stones. He thinks it would be a waste to throw the sword into the water so he hides it under a tree. This is ironic because is supposed to be loyal to his king. Sir Bedivere’s hesitance brings King Arthur’s death closer. 10.The epitaph on Arthur’s tomb adds to the surrounding by saying “Here lies Arthur, the once and future King.” By stating Arthur is the future King it is adding to his legacy as this great and mighty King.

Evaluate and Connect 11 (Max): From our previous discussion on page 157 we learn that King Arthur is a great king, visionary leader, brave fighter, and a heroic figure. Sir Mordred was King Arthur’s illegitimate son. 12 (Marc): I think the mood of this story is suspense, because once Sir Arthur has his dream and his nephew tells him of his vision, it gives a mood of suspense before the battle. 13 (Gabriel): Arthur is motivated by a longstanding distrust of Mordred. His desire to adhere to the chivalric code was another motivator to fight. Causing Arthur to lose his men. Arthur’s actions were unwise because he was told in his dream that he was gonna die if he fought Mordred. 14 (AJ): In Malory’s dialogue it shows us the character’s personalities and the nobility they have. Most of the dialogue is about the fight or related to King Arthur. The knights express loyalty to King Arthur. Malory’s dialogue provides many warnings. 15 (Mia): This section makes me want to read more about King Arthur because I want to hear everyone’s interpretation of him and his other stories.

Literary Elements King Arthur was a legendary hero because he died in the line of battle, and tried to take revenge over the fallen victims. 2. Important to the British people were: obedience, loyalty, fighting the disloyal and defend the weak. 3. The legend of Arthur endured because he had characteristics that the people at the time wanted in a king. They also learned lessons from the stories.

A Flawed Hero No, The story of King Arthur would not be more interesting if he were depicted as flawless because there would be no plot to the story. If everything was perfect, there would not be a story to tell. If the king were perfect there would be no fight and he would not have died. He had an imperfect past.
