Laboratory Equipment Use and Description
2
Today your goal is to sketch and describe laboratory equipment used in chemistry. Some pieces will be familiar, while others will be less familiar. To start, I will review a few of the pieces of equipment (primarily how they are used) and then you will go to marked location in laboratory to draw and describe the equipment.
3
Beaker vs. Graduated Cylinder
A beaker is used for mixing, heating, and observing. It is never used for making accurate nor precise measurements. A graduate cylinder is used for measuring with accuracy and precision. It is not used for mixing, heating, or making qualitative observation. A glass graduated cylinder will have a plastic circle around it which can be moved up or down. It is a safety feature for reducing the chance that it may be broken. The circular plastic piece should always be at the top. Never use it to mark your “fill” location. Image 2 from:

Using a Graduated Cylinder
You will use a graduated cylinder frequently in chemistry. Watch the demonstration of how to read it properly.

Stirring Rod vs. Thermometer
A stirring rod is used for stirring (hence its name) but also for a process known as decanting. I will demonstrate decanting for you. A thermometer in this class will be an alcohol thermometer. You can distinguish an alcohol thermometer from a Hg thermometer by the color of the liquid. The alcohol thermometer has red liquid, while the HG thermometer has a silver line. Image 1 from:

Bunsen Burner vs. Hot Plate
A Bunsen burner is used only when a flame is required. You should check that the hose does not have any cracks, and that both parts of the hose are firmly attached. A hot plate is used when something needs to be heated (we have few of these, so usually we will use Bunsen Burners). Never leave your Bunsen burner unattended while lit. The white top is made of ceramic which does not change colors at the “low” temperatures we will use. So never assume a hot plate it cooled. Never leave your hot plate on or plugged in when not in use. Image 1 from: Image 2 from:

Crucible vs. Mortar and Pestle
A crucible is a small container used to heat materials to red hot. It is subjected to the hottest part of the flame. The Mortar and Pestle are used for mashing (no heating ever, they will break). Image 1 from:

The rest of the story For the remaining pieces of laboratory equipment, I will review with you how to use them when needed by the experiment. Listen to directions and be prepared to create a graphical organizer. The graphic organizer will be projected using the document camera or you may create flash cards.
