1 Teacher Training Program
Stage 1: individualized instruction

2 Early literacy intervention
How can we best teach young English language learners English? How can we help them to maintain their native language? How can we produce the best long term academic outcomes?

3 Instructional methods
Adult-child storybook reading Literacy-enriched play settings Theme-based curriculum Teacher-directed structure literacy curriculum Progress Monitoring

4 Week 1: Shared Story Book Reading
Engage children in dialogue while reading Ask children questions about the book TIP: How you are reading books with children is very important as whether or not you read to them

5 Week 2: Literacy-Enriched play environments
Writing opportunities in all areas of education Allow the children to work in small groups to make the environment literacy-rich TIP: Literacy materials should be available in all areas of the classroom. Books should be chosen in order to match the curriculum. Play areas should have materials and activities that encourage vocabulary in both languages

6 Week 3: Directed instruction
Vocabulary  Use many words and rare words Role Play Reflection Examples: Word walls TIP: Critical with second language learners- the more explicit strategies the better

7 Early literacy skills to keep in mind
Rhyming Alliteration  especially in beginning of words Blending sounds and segments Print awareness Letter names and sounds Book and print rules Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary

8 Lesson plans organized around a storybook
This adds importance of reading Lessons should have two literacy activities that are designed to assess literacy skills (rhyming, narrative stories, printing) Each lesson plan needs to have objectives What do we want the child to learn? What does the teacher say to the group of children?
