A vote could be taken to see which character students believe is most responsible, and the names re-ordered to reflect the number of votes each character receives. Encourage students to discuss why they have chosen a particular character and not another.

3 Unit 2 GCSE Speaking & Listening Role Play Task – 15 marks
Perform an improvisation based on An Inspector Calls You are going to recreate a Jeremy Kyle style TV programme where each of you will have to account for your involvement in Eva Smith’s death. You will need to stay in character and justify your treatment of Eva Smith. You will be working in groups of 6. 5 of you will assume the role of one of the Birlings and Gerald and one person will be Jeremy Kyle.

4 The inspector’s speech
Before the inspector leaves he sums up each character’s role in relation to Eva’s death. Read his final speech again. Who do you think the inspector is addressing this speech to? What do you think the purpose of this speech is? This speech sums up the moral of the play and addresses the audience, as well as the characters of the play.

When the inspector leaves how would you describe the feelings of each of the characters left in the room? Mr Birling Mrs Birling Sheila Eric Concerned about his knighthood and the public scandal there will be. Blames Eric. Thinks she has done nothing wrong. Anxious to avoid a scandal. Feels guilty. Angry with her parents for not accepting responsibility. Worksheet Twenty-eight accompanies this slide. Ashamed of his parents and blames his mother for the death of Eva and his child.
