EACH OF YOU HELPED TO KILL HER! Find the parts played by each member of the Birling family in Eva’s death THE INSPECTOR says that Mr Birling………………… Mrs Birling………………… Sheila…………………… Gerald……………….. Eric………………….. THE INSPECTOR says that at least Gerald had……………………………… NOW THAT EVA IS GONE You can’t…………………………………. You can’t ………………………………. You can’t even…………………………. P 56

The Inspector’s Speech 57 ‘But just remember this, One Eva Smith has gone but There are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us……… all intertwined with our lives, and what we think and say and do. We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other. And I tell you that the time will soon come when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and in blood and anguish. Good night.

LO: to explore how Priestley uses language & dramatic techniques to present his ideas Look closely at the Inspector’s final speech; underline any key phrases which reflect Priestley’s ideas and themes of the play. Explain clearly in your annotations what Priestley was trying to suggest about social and moral responsibility. How do Priestley’s ideas tie in with the socialist ideology? In what way has Priestley used the inspector as his mouthpiece?

A spirit or ghost? What do you think? Knows things before asking. Questions the family one at a time and does not let them see the photograph together. Does not ‘know’ the Chief Constable. Stands up to Mr and Mrs Birling even though they are rich and influential. Seems more concerned with morality than criminal law. Inspector Goole

What have I learnt about Responsibility ? Do you think that Priestley’s message is still relevant today? Hmwk Find out what you can about David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ idea? Has it any similarities with Priestley’s views?
