1 BUPT final year projects 2017-2018
Richard Clegg

2 Area 1 – complex networks
Complex networks (or graph theory) studies interconnected objects. Many things can be viewed as “nodes” and “edges” Friendships The Internet Social networks (baidu, Facebook) Academic authorship Neurons in the brain Buying items online

3 Area 1 – complex networks (project details)
Considering evolving networks. How do networks change and grow? Can we predict new “links”? If you make a new friend who would that friend be? What product would someone buy next? How can we predict what films someone would like? Working with big data How can we analyse massive graphs? Make use of “parallel computing”. Use modern “big data” systems for graph analysis. Can we use many CPU cores to speed up processing?

4 The Internet is the most complex machine on the planet.
The Internet is poorly understood. We must measure and understand the Internet. Create new measurements on running systems. Find new things to measure. Analyse existing systems for new insights.

5 Area 2 – Internet measurement (project details)
New insights from old data Video traffic extremely important: How does video buffering work? Can we tell which traffic is video traffic? Can we explain how video sites work by looking at internet traces? Internet performance: What makes network connections fast? What is the connection between loss and throughput? What can measurements tell us about performance? Making new measurements What insights can we gain on the network by collecting data? What can we find out about the Internet’s infrastructure? Can we understand more about how the network works in China? What causes delay on a campus network?
