Past Progressive Remember: Practice Makes Perfect!

2 Use The Past Progressive is used when we talk about something which was happening at a special time in the past. It is also called Past Continuous. Have a look at the following examples: Action was in progress at special time in the past Peter was reading a book yesterday evening.

3 Use Two actions were happening at the same time (the actions do not influence each other) Anne was writing a letter while Steve was reading the New York Times.

4 Use Together with the Simple Past. The action in the
Simple Past interrupted the action in the Past Progressive. While we were sitting at the breakfast table, the telephone rang. Repeated actions irritating the speaker Andrew was always coming in late. (I don't like it.)

5 Time Expressions while all morning as yesterday at 7:00
yesterday from 2:00 to 5:00 during He was swimming in the pool all morning. While Judi was washing the dishes the phone rang.

6 Some Examples He was flying all day.
Last night at 8 o'clock we were dancing. Yesterday morning the kids were playing. While he was jumping, she was watching him. He was sitting outside for too long. He was working at 10 o'clock in the morning.

7 Positive Form V ing I, he, she, it was Rest of the sentence.

8 Negative Form V ing I, he, she, it was not Rest of the sentence. were
