Justice-Involved Veterans and the VA Thank participants. Pledge of Allegiance. Power of all coming together to serve those who have served. County representation?

2 VJO Responsibilities Identify Veterans throughout 10 counties in NW Ohio who are Justice-Involved Assist with enrollment, services and coordination with Court Personnel Attorneys/Public Defenders Law Enforcement Judges/Magistrates Probation Often working between different states or multiple Ohio jurisdictions. In your bags is information on VJO and other VA programs that address justice involved Veterans.

3 Numbers are always good!
In Ohio there are 848,124 identified Veterans The following numbers are provided by each County’s Veterans Service Commissions/Veteran Service Officers Numbers are current

5 Numbers…… Since June, 2014, 347 Justice-Involved Veterans have been served in NW Ohio These Veterans had criminal charges. These are combined between Municipal and Common Pleas Courts Civil involvement will be addressed in following slides

8 The Mission Within the Mission
The true mission of the VJO is to prevent the unnecessary incarceration of Veterans with treatment commensurate with the offense. The mission within includes the partnership of the legal community and Court personnel working with VJO to provide services at the VA; freeing up needed community resources for the communities as well as lessening the financial burden of incarceration on the Court and County funds. Are we accomplishing this?

9 N= (34%) Cases were dismissed with Treatment Completed at VA 120 (are still on Probation in Treatment at VA) 88 are unknown(PV/left State/off the grid 23 Are currently incarcerated or have been unsuccessful in treatment and returned to incarceration or high levels of community control. Discuss probation cycles. And can’t report on treatment in the community.

10 Civil Issues Free Legal Advice Clinic at Toledo VA
Child Custody, Divorce, Bankruptcy, Foreclosures, Tax issues Since November 2015 over 300 Veterans have been served. Clinic within Clinic Each year we offer a Simple Wills and Durable Powers of Attorney Clinic . Over 200 served. University of Toledo School of Law Free Legal Advice Clinic at Ann Arbor Special thanks to Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Operation Legal Help Ohio, Pro Bono Lawyers and the Toledo Bar Association and Paralegal Association of Northwestern Ohio! Please see flyers in your folders for resources and times.

Substance Abuse Suboxone (opiates), Vivitrol (Alcohol and opiates), Antabuse, Gabapentin, Acamprosate-alcohol, Psychotherapy Treatment (CORE CBT and Relapse Prevention),IOP and Residential (Battle Creek, Dayton and Cleveland) Domestic Violence SAFE Protocol 26 weeks PTSD Depression/Anxiety Sleep Anger Management DBT Psychiatric (medication consultation) Peer Support

12 Additional VA Support SeRV Mental Health Case-management (Post 9-11 Veterans) Suicide Prevention Vet Center (Combat Veterans and MST) *** Shuttle service runs daily between all counties to the VA. *** Two shuttles run daily between Toledo and Ann Arbor
