3 Why Implement 12 powerful Words?
12 Powerful Words are commonly found on standardized assessment They usually cause students difficulty when they encounter them Students not familiar with them are usually become confused and choose incorrect answers It is difficult to answer question in any subject if they do not know what the question is asking Students need to be on friendly terms with the 12 Powerful Words These words are found practically in every subject area and on every grade level of standardized assessment Relieve test anxiety and achieve higher test scores

Vocabulary Problem Solving Plays an integral role in the understanding and learning of content Provides access to understanding an assessment item Content Vocabulary Directional Vocabulary Students should be able to: Identify problems that can be solved Explore options for solutions Use appropriate thinking strategies Manage the whole process of metacognition

7 Implementation of 12 Powerful Words
Students will take a Pre Assessment Friday, March 11th in Advisement; tests will be graded and tallied by the Advisement teacher Implementation/teaching will begin Week of March 14th 3 words will be implemented each week for 4 weeks Words will be distributed through out the class periods (ex: Week of March 14, 3 words will be taught in the 1st period class, Week of March 21, next 3 words will be taught 2nd period, etc.) Lessons will be taught by the classroom teacher, but strategies that will used will be provided by instructional coaches, so that consistency is taught across all classrooms Student will take the Post Assessment on Friday, April 25th

11 Strategies used Strategies should take about 15 to 20 minutes each day (this should be explicit instruction); This can be implemented as a part of your regular instruction and part of your ILT Each Day of the week, the 3 words being taught for the week will be stated over the intercom Day 1, Monday- introduce 3 words and provide with definition and give an example; have students write definitions on the sheets provided. Definitions will be provided. Day 2, Tuesday- say words again, restate definition and have students give example of each word Day 3, Wednesday- Student will be in groups of 2 to complete the match game using a timer (about 2 minutes each). The cards are provided; you will need to make the number of sets needed Day 4, Thursday- have students to create a picture to illustrate each word on the poster using a 11x17 sheet of paper. It can be divided into 12 squares or it can be completed in a collage form. The illustration should include word, definition, example, picture or other graphic that helps student to understand and visualize the words Day 5, complete a short formative assessment provide by the instructional coaches (3 words introduced for the week) Formative Assessment will be provided in various formats and assessments will only address words taught for that week.
