11 Objective and Key Points
SWBAT distinguish and describe the differences between formal, functional, and perceptual regions by creating a Regions Cafeteria Map. There are three main types of regions: formal, functional, and perceptual (vernacular).

12 REGIONS Grouping of places that have something in common and can be given a name based on similar features.

13 EXAMPLES Climate zones: Polar Region, Mid Latitudes, Tropics Geographic Region: Gulf Coast states; Middle East Political Regions: countries, states Economic Regions: OPEC; Sun Belt Cultural Regions: based on religion, ethnicity, custom - i.e., Latin America, Arab world Physical Region: based on common vegetation and plant geological characteristics. Ex: Amazon Rainforest, Siberia Write down these examples at the bottom of the back page under #20 East Texas

14 What kind of region is this?
Discuss which region this creates and why? Use terms from your notes:

15 Cafeteria Practice Draw and describe the three types of regions (FORMAL, FUNCTIONAL, AND PERCEPTUAL) for the cafeteria. After you label the regions, describe why that depiction is an example of that region. Be Ready to Share

16 Regions Practice-5 Minutes

17 Regions Practice Key

18 Sustainability and Climate Change
Source Analysis Complete Both and be ready to share.

19 SA #1-Gas Guzzling (think sustainability)

20 SA #2-Climate Change (think global warming)
