Happy & healthy, safe & sound, excellence & equity, leadership & collaboration, Staying on and On the right track. L2C is referenced in the document 1.66. child health strategy (1.66) family learning applied learning in English and maths personalised learning diversity & collaboration Healthy Schools Helps provide evidence for schools to meet the HS standards in the HE core theme: 2.1 Monitoring food in schools 2.2 practical food education & training 2.9 Balanced diet training & planning

4 Compulsory KS3 2011 “A further significant boost for cookery and food awareness among young people is the Government’s plan to make cooking a compulsory part of the key stage 3 curriculum in schools, from Practical cooking is already much strengthened in the recently revised secondary curriculum, which is being introduced in September 2008” January 2008 – Ed Balls / Alan Johnson(!) presented the cross government strategy for obesity. Part of this paper Healthy Weight, healthy lives there is the above statement as part of a much wider agenda. The press have put an interesting ‘spin’ on the story – there are no specific requirements made in the announcements; nothing about 8 one hours lesson or anything else. The DCSF press statement can be viewed on the website. Clearly states that food will become a compulsory element of food technology from 2011. Childhood obesity will progress will be monitored through the inclusion as one of the indicators in the Child Health PSA. Also expects a whole school food policy. Duty to promote the well-being of pupils – guidance to be issued 2008

5 New secondary curriculum
Teaching Sept 08 Level 4-8 have been modified to complement the revisions to the programme of study First KS 3 NC tests to amended level descriptions May 2011 Teacher assessment judgements made during KS - the new level descriptors should be used with Yr 7 from Sept. 08 Assessing pupil progress (APP) providing teachers with more effective assessment approaches. Materials being developed. Available on QCA website Clear message about food sitting within D&T curriculum – don’t throw away all the curriculum development work that has been successful. Still requires the use of appropriate designing in food – not paper! Dept / faculties need to have planning time to look at the re-focus for food and how best the PoS can be addressed by different materials.

6 Key Stage 3 programme of study
The study of making in food should include: a broad range of practical skills, techniques and equipment and standard recipes, and how to use them to develop, plan and cook meals and single or multiple products how to plan and carry out a broad range of practical cooking tasks safely and hygienically healthy eating models relating to a balanced diet, nutritional needs of different groups in society and factors affecting food choice and how to take these into account when planning, preparing and cooking meals and products Many schools will be providing a curriculum that meets these requirements but there will be many that are not. L2C will provide the framework for schools to look at the identified learning objectives and support resources to help plan the revised currciulum. Delivery of the L2C framework will enable schools to meet the PoS requirements. the characteristics of a broad range of ingredients, including their nutritional, functional and sensory properties.
