2. Sinners & Punishment Gluttons
Overindulgence, produce nothing but garbage
Lay ½ buried in filth while Cerberus slaves over them.
Rain changes to excrement
“Huge hailstones, dirty water, and black snow pour from the dismal air to putrefy the putrid slush that waits for them below… And they too howl like dogs in the freezing storms turning and turning from it as they thought one naked side could keep the other warm,” (10- 15).

Pagan (mythology) why placed in hell
“the ravening beast howls through his triple throats like a mad dog over the spirits sunk in the foul paste. His eyes are red, his beard is greased with phlegm, his belly is swollen and his hands are claws to rip the wrenches and flay and mangle them,” (13-18).

4. Ciacco
Ciacco The Hog
Resided in Florence and Dante asks about the state of Florence.
He indicates it is filled with problems and strife.
Dante writes this after his exile- political allegory
“Your own city, so rife with hatred that the bitter cup flows over was mine too in that other, clearer life.” (46-48)
Dante shows pity for this soul

5. Ciacco’s Prediction for Florence
Souls know the future
Written
Events he talks about happened in 1300
Speaks of the struggle between the blacks and the whites
Bloody fight between the two factions May 1,1300
White Guelphs drive out the blacks
Blacks regain power years later and exile many, including Dante
Dante part of city council that banished members from both parties
Dante is said to have never forgiven the people of Florence

6. The Last Judgment
Their souls will be perfected as much as they can be .
“Look to your science again where it is written: the more a thing is perfect the more it feels of pleasure and of pain. As for these souls, though they can never soar to true perfection, still in new time they will be nearer than they were ever before.”
