1 Agenda Read intro to Chapter 19. Brainstorm/discussion Graphic Organizer – ST/LT causes of the French Revolution Homework: Read p Write a thesis which identifies the cause(s) of the storming of the Bastille. Essential Question #1 What were the immediate and underlying causes of the French Revolution? Daily Learning Goal: I can create a graphic organizer which shows the long and short term causes of the French Revolution.

Discuss in your groups: In what ways does the French Revolution IMMEDIATELY stand out as an important moment in European History? What can we learn/identify from the statement that while no one could foresee the execution of Louis XVI, he faced struggles at the beginning of his reign 18 years earlier?

3 ST/LT Causes: The French Revolution
Short-Term Causes Long-Term Causes Famine – Crop failure in 1788 caused massive grain shortages across the country. Massive price increase on grain/bread Banking Crisis – caused by the famine and economic crisis; banks refused to lend additional money to the government. *Estates-General – Inequality in representation and exclusion of 3rd Estate was the firecracker moment which led to the Revolution. End of Press Censorship – allowed dissemination of ideals critical to the cause of the 3rd Estate. Financial Crisis – poor management of debt due to mid- century wars and American Rev. War; poorly organized and unequal tax systems. Political Turmoil – disagreements between Louis and nobles/Parliament of Paris. Long-Standing Inequality – Nobles and Clerics (1st and 2nd Estates) were exempt from some taxes while 3rd Estate (97% of population, lower class) paid most taxes.

In what ways was the Bastille a symbol of pre- revolutionary era France? In what ways does the taking of the prison symbolize values of the Revolution? What are these values? What is the symbolism of attacking a prison with 7 prisoners? What is the symbolism/importance of attacking a prison with 7 prisoners?

7 Petition to the National Assembly
What does Pinaigre ask the National Assembly for? Why does she want this? What does this petition tell us about how the revolutionaries were viewed by society? By the National Assembly?

8 Synthesis Activity What goals and ideologies are represented by the actions taken at the Bastille Prison and the Palace of Versailles? Construct a thesis statement which argues for 2-3 values.
