2 Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 7–2) Main Idea and Vocabulary
Example 1: Make a Line Plot Key Concept: Range and Outliers Example 2: Analyze Line Plots Example 3: Analyze Line Plots Lesson Menu

3 I will make and interpret line plots.
range outlier Main Idea/Vocabulary

4 Step 1 Draw and label a number line.
Make a Line Plot Callie surveyed sixteen students to find the number of pets each owned. The results of her survey were: 1, 5, 0, 2, 2, 0, 3, 4, 2, 1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 3, 1. Make a line plot of the data. Then describe the data presented in the graph. Step 1 Draw and label a number line. Example 1

5 Make a Line Plot Step 2 Place as many Xs above each number as there are responses for that number. Example 1

6 16 students responded to the question. No one owns more than 5 pets.
Make a Line Plot Step 3 Describe the data. 16 students responded to the question. No one owns more than 5 pets. Four students do not own any pets. The response given most is 1 pet owned. This represents the mode. Answer: So, 16 students were surveyed. More people owned 1 pet than any other number. Example 1

7 Which statement best describes the data shown?
The most number of siblings students have are 4. 14 students were surveyed. Most people have 2 siblings. 14 students were surveyed. More people had 3 siblings than 0 siblings. No students have siblings. A B C D Example 1

9 Analyze Line Plots The line plot shows the prices of sneakers in one store. Find the median and the mode of the data. Then describe the data using them. Example 2

10 There are 22 numbers represented in the line plot.
Analyze Line Plots There are 22 numbers represented in the line plot. The two middle numbers, shown on the line plot, are $45 and $45. So, the median is $45. This means that half of the sneakers cost more than $45 and half cost less than $45. The number that appears most often is $40. So, the mode of the data is $40. This means that more sneakers cost $40 than any other price. Example 2

11 Analyze Line Plots Answer: So, the median is $45 and the mode is $40. Half of the sneakers cost less than or equal to $45 and more sneakers cost $40 than any other price. Example 2

12 What is the median and mode of the data?
median 45; mode 45 median 40; mode 45 median 35; mode 40 median 60; mode 70 A B C D Example 2

13 Analyze Line Plots Find the range and any outliers of the data. Then describe the data using them. Example 3

14 range = greatest value – least value
Analyze Line Plots range = greatest value – least value = $70 – $35, or $35 Answer: So, the range of the prices is $35. The price $70 is much higher than the rest of the prices. So, $70 is an outlier. Example 3

15 What is the range and any outliers of the data?
range 35; outlier 35 range 35; no outliers range 35; outlier 45 range 35; outlier 70 A B C D Example 3
