Finally Ngram Viewer from Google Book. The idea here is that for better or for worse, Google has scanned a whole lot of books. They can now tell us the frequency with which an “N gram” appears in all these books. An n gram is a set of n words (where n is ≤5). SO I can find out how often the 2 gram “Goodnight Moon” has appeared, etc. How often does the 1-gram, “the” appear? It looks like the word “the” constitutes about 5-6 percent of all the words used. How about “a?” It’s right around 1.5%. How about “I?” (Let them speculate.) It’s around .5% And “we?” …. Higher or lower than “I?” [CLICK]
