3 Why “WhyTry?” CHS’s current graduation rate: 71.8% over 4 years , % over 5 years On Time Graduation Committee formed: Long term goal set to increase graduation rate to 85%. Short term goal to increase graduation rate by 4% through the class of Analyzed Homeroom data, formed action plans. School Initiative tied to: School Improvement Plan and District Policy Introduced to all freshman. Why Try is for every student, from the struggling back row kid, all the way to the high- achieving all star in the front row. Every student faces challenges and needs resilience.

4 Design And implementation
Design of Intervention: Why Try Design: see handouts The timeframe was decided up by the Why Try committee members consisting of: Vice principal, 8 teachers, our librarian and I Implementation of design was performed by 1 health teacher, 1 SPED teacher, 2 Law and Community teachers and myself (implemented to 2nd health class). All 11 lessons needed to be introduced, but in no specific order. Experimental group received Why Try / Control group did not My roles: Pilot project and co-data collection Leadership roles changed and increased throughout the project Facilitation

5 Multi-Cultural and Diversity
Why Try meets every student where they currently are The curriculum is currently available in Spanish A/R project did not consist of any current ELL students. I did have a Spanish speaking Para- educator available for any translation of vocabulary or cultural context relation.

Goal: 5 incidences over the course of Why Try and score below control group Results: Exp. Group-6 incidents caused by 3 students Control Group- 13 incidences caused by 8 students

Goal: Experimental group to measure lower than the control group. Results: Exp. Group: 9 absences caused by 3 students Control group: 15 absences caused by 10 students

Why Try Measure R

10 reflection Effective intervention:
Intervention needs to be over a longer period of time in order to track better attendance, discipline and GPA data . Increase in experimental groups Why Try Measure R’s scores. Research has increasingly linked increased internal locus of control with academic success and positive behavior. Stakeholders: Success in the development Some success in the implementation Measured success of intervention Communication: Results were shared at On Time Grad Committee, CHS Newsletter, principal and vice principal No celebrations due to lack of completion by colleagues

11 Professional and Personal Growth
Leadership: increase in confidence, positive feedback from colleagues, appointed new job duties and roles ARP supported professional growth: Standard 3(D): Leads in the planning and implementation of research based guidance programs designed to meet the identified needs of students. Standard 4(C): Collaborates in the development of school policies, programs and services that are equitable, responsive, and prevent harassment and marginalizing behaviors. Knowledge and skills gained: excel skills, Homeroom, Skyward, classroom management skills, collaborations skills To continue or not continue: Assist and facilitate in the process to implement Why Try as a part of our curriculum in our freshman health classes. Involvement in Why Try staff in-service day. I will not continue data collection as this is an assigned role.

12 Changes: Earlier intervention re: classroom guidance, keep it simple
NEXT STEPS: Buy in from building principal and school district – pre pilot for the pilot next year Me: Why Try level 2 training, assist in WhyTry in service day, continue to be a member of the committee Staff: In-service training to surrender the one up – WhyTry implemented into curriculum Students- Continue to secure student participation Parents/community: There is a parent piece that could be added to the pilot next year

13 Reflection Continued Greatest area of professional growth this year?:
Increased involvement in PLC’s and collaboration with staff members outside of the LSC leading to increased confidence in my leadership skills, allowing me to both take on and be given more leadership roles within our school. Changed in my practice: Continued professional growth: Involvement in PLC’s, actively involved with Class of 2019 (graduation requirement changes, 5 year plans, scheduling, etc.), more trainings and continue to focus on bringing community resources into our schools.
