1 Definition and Purposes HwaChoon Park EDIT 2000 Spring 2016
E-Portfolio Definition and Purposes HwaChoon Park EDIT 2000 Spring 2016

2 Definitions of traditional portfolios in education
“A purposeful collection of student work that illustrates efforts, progress, and achievement in one or more areas [over time]. The collection must include: student participation in selecting contents, the criteria for selection, the criteria for judging merit, and evidence of student self-reflection (p. 60).” -The Northwest Evaluation Association (1991)-

3 Definitions of electronic portfolios in education
A collection of authentic and diverse evidence, drawn from a larger archive representing what a person or organization has learned over time, on which the person or organization has reflected, and that is designed for presentation to one or more audiences for a particular rhetorical purpose -the National Learning Infrastructure Initiative (EDUCAUSE; Cambridge, 2004)

4 Traditional vs. electronic portfolios process
Collecting Selecting Reflecting Projecting Celebrating Archiving Linking/Thinking Storytelling Collaborating Publishing (Barrett, 2007)

5 Functions of e-Portfolios
The exposure function: demonstrating an individual’s selected achievements or mastery of certain competences in the most appealing way (ex. Showcases) The reflective function: the metaphor of learning as a journey of the connection of past and future learning. This is useful in learning activities designed for self- regulation aims, student-centered, self-monitoring learning as the dual processes of learning and reflection. The assessment function: documenting the records of a person’s progress towards certain goals or standards. E-portfolios have been used as an alternative method for authentic assessment of learning, especially, in order to overcome test-based assessment The social function :e-Portfolio is a way digital communication to respond to the need of different stakeholders (teachers, supervisors, colleagues, employers and others) to have easy and fast access to the information about learners’ knowledge background, skills, competences and progress. (Tzeng & Chen, 2012)
