4 In 1918 Fitzgerald was assigned to Camp Sheridan, near Montgomery, Alabama.
He fell in love with a celebrated belle, eighteen-year-old Zelda Sayre, the youngest daughter of an Alabama Supreme Court judge. The romance intensified Fitzgerald’s hopes for the success of his novel, but after revision it was rejected by Scribners for a second time. The war ended just before he was to be sent overseas; after his discharge in 1919 he went to New York City to seek his fortune in order to marry. Unwilling to wait while Fitzgerald succeeded in the advertisement business and unwilling to live on his small salary, Zelda Sayre broke their engagement.

Moved back to US and Zelda trained as a ballet dancer In 1930 Zelda was admitted to a mental hospital in Switzerland for one year, Fitzgerald stayed in a hotel near her, writing. She recovered but relapsed and in 1932 was admitted to John Hopkins and spent the rest of her life in outpatient or inpatient treatment. They spent money carelessly and ended up in debt. He made some money writing in Hollywood, but he never was financially secure Fitzgerald died of a heart attack in 1940, believing he was a failure. Zelda died in a fire at a hospital in 1948

7 Brief Bibliography Fitzgerald wrote about unfulfilled dreams- impossible worlds. He wrote about the people who refused to give up on these dreams and the consequences they paid. Novels: This Side of Paradise-1920 The Beautiful and the Damned- 1922 The Great Gatsby-1925 Tender is the Night About a man and his schizophrenic wife He wrote numerous articles and short stories.

10 Literary Terms Review Metaphor- Comparisons of unlike things (include similes in this) Connotation- The further meanings of a word, beyond dictionary definition: buck, hot, lost Imagery- Description Allusion- A reference to another literary figure or historic event in a piece of literature (in our case, Gatsby) Symbol Personification Tone- How the author uses words to convey the emotion or feeling of a text. There may be more than one tone in a text.
